What is the CRS?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to assess and rank Express Entry candidates. Your CRS score determines your position in the Express Entry pool and ultimately whether you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

Your CRS score is the single most important number in the Express Entry process. Candidates with higher scores receive invitations first. The score is calculated based on factors including age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and additional factors like a provincial nomination or Canadian education.

How the Scoring Works

The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points. Core human capital factors (age, education, language, work experience) account for up to 500 points for candidates without a spouse, or 460 with a spouse. Skill transferability factors add up to 100 points, and additional factors (such as a provincial nomination worth 600 points) can significantly boost your score.

Quick Tip

Check the latest CRS cut-off scores on the IRCC website before submitting your profile. Scores fluctuate with each Express Entry draw, so timing your application and improving your profile can make a real difference.
