What is the FSW Program?

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Program is one of three immigration programs managed under Express Entry. It is designed for skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to become permanent residents of Canada. Candidates are assessed on a 100-point grid based on language ability, education, work experience, age, arranged employment, and adaptability.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

The FSW is the most common pathway for skilled professionals outside Canada to apply for permanent residence. Unlike the Canadian Experience Class, you do not need prior Canadian work experience, making it accessible to applicants worldwide.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you need at least one year of continuous full-time skilled work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation within the last 10 years. You must also meet minimum language requirements (CLB 7 in all abilities) and score at least 67 out of 100 on the FSW selection grid.

Quick Tip

Getting your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) done early is essential since it is required for your Express Entry profile. Processing by WES or other designated organizations can take several weeks.
