What is TEER?

TEER stands for Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities. It is the categorization system within the National Occupation Classification (NOC) that groups occupations into six levels (TEER 0 through TEER 5) based on the amount of education, training, and experience typically required for a job.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

Your occupation's TEER category directly affects which immigration programs you qualify for. Express Entry programs like FSW and CEC require occupations in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3. TEER also influences language requirements and the CRS points you receive for work experience.

TEER Categories

TEER 0 covers management occupations. TEER 1 requires a university degree. TEER 2 typically needs a college diploma or apprenticeship of two or more years. TEER 3 requires a college program of less than two years or on-the-job training of more than six months. TEER 4 needs a high school diploma or several weeks of on-the-job training. TEER 5 requires short work demonstrations with no formal education.

Quick Tip

The TEER system replaced the old skill levels (A, B, C, D) in 2022. If you see references to the old system in guides or forums, look up the current TEER equivalent for your NOC code to ensure accuracy.
