What is the FST Program?

The Federal Skilled Trades (FST) Program is one of the three immigration programs managed through Express Entry. It targets qualified tradespeople who want to become permanent residents of Canada, covering occupations such as electricians, plumbers, welders, heavy equipment operators, and chefs.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

Canada has a significant shortage of skilled tradespeople, making this program particularly relevant for those with hands-on trade skills. The FST program has lower language requirements than the FSW program and does not require a formal education credential assessment.

Eligibility Requirements

You need at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years. Language requirements are CLB 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing. You also need either a valid job offer of at least one year or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

Quick Tip

If your trade is Red Seal-endorsed, getting your credentials recognized in Canada may be easier. Research whether your specific trade qualifies for Red Seal certification to streamline your application.
