What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most widely recognized English language proficiency tests in the world. For Canadian immigration purposes, you need the IELTS General Training version (not Academic). It tests four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking, each scored on a band from 0 to 9.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

IELTS General Training is accepted by IRCC for all federal immigration programs. Your scores are converted to CLB levels, which directly impact your CRS score and program eligibility. A strong IELTS result can significantly improve your chances of receiving an ITA.

Score Conversion to CLB

A band score of 6.0 in all abilities equals CLB 7, which is the minimum for FSW. A score of 7.0 in reading and 7.5 in listening corresponds to CLB 9. The IRCC website provides detailed conversion tables between IELTS band scores and CLB levels for each skill.

Quick Tip

IELTS results are valid for two years. Plan your test date so that your results remain valid throughout your application process. Many test centers offer multiple dates per month, so book early to secure a convenient date and location.
