What is CELPIP?

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a computer-based English language test designed specifically for Canadian immigration and citizenship purposes. The CELPIP-General test measures four skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) and is accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and other immigration programs.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

CELPIP is a popular alternative to IELTS for Canadian immigration. Since it is computer-based and uses Canadian English, some test-takers find it more comfortable. Scores map directly to CLB levels, making the conversion straightforward. CELPIP-General LS (Listening and Speaking only) is also accepted for citizenship applications.

How Scoring Works

CELPIP scores range from 1 to 12 for each skill, and they correspond directly to CLB levels. A CELPIP score of 7 equals CLB 7, a score of 9 equals CLB 9, and so on. This direct mapping is simpler than the IELTS-to-CLB conversion.

Quick Tip

CELPIP is entirely computer-based, including the speaking section, where you speak into a microphone rather than to a human examiner. If you prefer this format, take practice tests on the CELPIP website to get comfortable with the interface before your test date.
