What is Service Canada?

Service Canada is the delivery arm of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). It provides Canadians and residents with access to government programs and services, including Social Insurance Number (SIN) applications, Employment Insurance (EI) claims, Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and Old Age Security (OAS) benefits.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

Service Canada is one of the first government offices you will visit as a newcomer. You need to go there to apply for your SIN, which is essential for working in Canada. Service Canada centres are located across the country and offer in-person assistance for various government services.

Key Services for Newcomers

Beyond SIN issuance, Service Canada helps with Employment Insurance applications if you lose your job, passport applications, and provides information about government programs you may be eligible for. Many services are also available online through the My Service Canada Account portal.

Quick Tip

Visit the Service Canada website to find your nearest office and check wait times before going. Some offices accept walk-ins while others require appointments. Bringing all required documents on your first visit saves you from having to return.
