What is a PGWP?

A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows international students who have graduated from an eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to work for any employer in Canada. The permit duration matches the length of the study program, up to a maximum of three years.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

The PGWP is a crucial bridge between studying and permanent residence. The Canadian work experience you gain on a PGWP can make you eligible for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry, which is one of the most popular pathways to PR.

Eligibility Requirements

You must have studied full-time at an eligible DLI, completed a program of at least eight months, and applied within 180 days of receiving your final marks. Your study program must lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate. Not all DLI programs are PGWP-eligible, so verify before enrolling.

Quick Tip

Apply for your PGWP as soon as you receive your final transcript or completion letter. Processing times vary, and you want to start accumulating Canadian work experience as quickly as possible toward CEC eligibility.
