Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada
LINC
A free English language training program funded by the federal government for eligible newcomers to Canada.
What is LINC?
Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) is a free English language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It is available to adult permanent residents and protected persons who need to improve their English skills for daily life, work, and integration into Canadian society.
Why It Matters for Newcomers
LINC classes are completely free and offered at various levels from beginner to advanced (CLB 1 to 8). They cover practical English for everyday situations such as finding a job, accessing healthcare, communicating with schools, and understanding Canadian culture. Some LINC programs also offer childcare for participants.
How to Enroll
To access LINC, you first need a language assessment through a designated assessment centre. The assessment determines your current CLB level and places you in the appropriate class. LINC programs are offered at schools, community centres, and settlement organizations across Canada, with full-time and part-time options.
Quick Tip
LINC classes are an excellent way to improve your English while also building a local network. Many LINC programs include field trips, workplace visits, and community activities. The French equivalent is called CLIC (Cours de Langue pour les Immigrants au Canada). Both are entirely free for eligible newcomers.
