What is CBSA?

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is the federal agency responsible for managing Canada's borders. CBSA officers process travellers at airports, land crossings, and seaports, enforce immigration and customs laws, and conduct security screenings. They are the first officials you encounter when entering Canada.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

When you arrive in Canada for the first time, a CBSA officer will review your documents, verify your immigration status, and officially admit you. If you are landing as a permanent resident, the CBSA officer at the port of entry will confirm your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and may issue your first entry stamp.

What to Expect at the Border

Have your passport, visa or eTA, COPR (if applicable), and any supporting documents easily accessible. The officer may ask about your travel purpose, length of stay, and funds. Answer honestly and concisely. You may also need to complete a customs declaration.

Quick Tip

If you are bringing goods into Canada when you land, you can fill out the CBSA declaration form (BSF186) in advance. List high-value items like electronics and jewelry to avoid duty issues on future re-entries.
