Biometrics
Fingerprints and a photograph collected for identity verification as part of Canadian immigration applications.
What are Biometrics?
In the context of Canadian immigration, biometrics refers to the collection of your fingerprints and a digital photograph for identity verification purposes. Most foreign nationals applying for a visa, work permit, study permit, or permanent residence must provide biometrics as part of their application.
Why It Matters for Newcomers
Biometrics collection is a mandatory step for most immigration applications. After submitting your application, you receive a Biometrics Instruction Letter telling you to provide your biometrics at a designated collection point within 30 days. Your application cannot be processed without completing this step.
How It Works
You visit a designated biometrics collection site (a Visa Application Centre or Application Support Centre) in person. The process takes about 15 minutes and involves having your fingerprints scanned and your photo taken. Biometrics are valid for 10 years, so you may not need to provide them again for future applications.
Quick Tip
Book your biometrics appointment as soon as you receive the instruction letter, as popular collection centres can have wait times. The fee is $85 CAD per individual or $170 per family. Some countries have limited collection sites, so plan accordingly.
