Ontario Health Insurance Plan

OHIP

Ontario's government-funded health insurance program that covers medically necessary hospital and doctor services.

What is OHIP?

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is the provincial health insurance program for residents of Ontario. It covers medically necessary hospital services, visits to doctors and specialists, and certain diagnostic tests. OHIP is funded through taxes and is free for eligible Ontario residents.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

If you settle in Ontario, registering for OHIP is essential. It covers most doctor and hospital visits at no direct cost to you. However, there is a three-month waiting period for new residents, during which you will need private health insurance to cover any medical needs.

How to Apply

Apply in person at a Service Ontario location with your valid immigration documents (COPR, work permit, or study permit of six months or more), proof of Ontario residency (such as a lease or utility bill), and valid identification. You will receive a green health card with your photo.

Quick Tip

Purchase private health insurance to cover the three-month OHIP waiting period. Several Canadian insurance companies offer newcomer-specific plans at reasonable rates. Without coverage during this gap, a single emergency room visit could cost thousands of dollars.
